Moyes: City should show some respect!

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

David Moyes has accused Manchester City of showing a lack of respect to Everton in their chase for Joleon Lescott.

The Toffees have turned down two bids for the defender and boss Moyes is not happy at the way their cash-rich Premier League rivals are going about their business.

He told the Sunday Mirror: “It’s about showing respect and we’re not being shown that.

“I’m sure if I was (City boss) Mark Hughes, with all the money he has, I would try to buy the best players.

“But we try to go about it in a different fashion. I would think I would go about my business in the way I’ve always done.”

City have had bids of £15million and £18million for Lescott turned down - and are now believed to be returning soon with a £22million offer.

However, Everton are insisting they will not sell the England international defender, even for £30million.

Moyes continued: “I’ve always tried to contact the managers and show respect to them in terms of transfers - and no matter how much money I might have to spend I would always want to keep that up.

“It goes back to the managers having a drink together after the game, to the fact managers would still phone each other up when they are looking for a player. That is part of the way it should be done.”

Tevez agreed City deal weeks ago

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

Reports in England are claiming that Manchester City-bound Carlos Tevez decided to leave Old Trafford over two weeks ago.

The Mirror newspaper has reported that City will announce a £25.5 million move in the coming days, something that seems increasingly likely to be validated after United announced over the weekend that Tevez had rejected a five-year contract offer from the Red Devils.

A statement on United’s website said that despite an offer that would make him one of the highest earners at Old Trafford,” his advisers informed the club that, despite the success he has enjoyed during one of the club’s most successful periods, he does not wish to continue playing for Manchester United.”

Speculation is rife that Tevez was upset by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s reluctance to give him a starting spot, and the Argentine has earlier claimed he did not feel like “part of the family” in Manchester.

Tevez apparently made his decision to leave since he felt he was not valued enough at the Theatre of Dreams, despite being a fan favourite, with cries of “Sign him up, sign him up” often erupting in the stands whenever he appeared toward the end of the season.

At Eastlands, Tevez is apparently set to sign a £100,000 a week contract, and will be the third signing for City after they snapped up Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz.

Manager Mark Hughes, backed by the club’s Arab owners, is looking to revamp a City side that looking attackingly listless last season, and Tevez will join fellow new signing Santa Cruz as well as Robinho and Craig Bellamy up front for them.

After losing both Cristiano Ronaldo and Tevez early in the summer, Ferguson will certainly be under pressure to bring in new players, but United have so far been quiet in the market, despite being linked with Antonio Valencia, Douglas Costa and Karim Benzema among others.

City make bid for Real’s Raul

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

Manchester City have offered Real Madrid 40 million euros for striker Raul, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish sports daily Marca are reporting that City have made the first move to sign the 31-year-old Spanish forward, with contact having been made between representatives of City owner Sheikh Mansour and Raul’s agent.

Raul, a five-time La Liga winner and three-time Champions League victor has been strongly recommended to City by ex team-mate Robinho, who made his own shock move from Madrid to Eastlands in August last year.

Raul is under contract with Real until 2011 but has an extension clause linked to the number of games he plays each season.

Earlier this year he became the club’s all time top scorer and any attempt to sell him would be sure to cause uproar amongst the Bernebeu faithful.

However, the possible return to power of former president Florentino Perez may have an impact on the situation as Perez and Raul reportedly have a less than cordial relationship.

City have been quick to denounce a host of claims linking them with various players throughout Europe this season, so it remains to be seen if a swift denial is forthcoming in this case.

Kaka admits to BPL hopes

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

AC Milan ace Kaka has admitted that the bright lights of the Premier League may yet, one day, lure him to England.

Kaka, who came close to making a move to Manchester City during the winter transfer window, has consistently insisted that he is happy to ply his trade in Italy.

However, the Brazilian favourite has now revealed that the Premier League is on his list of possible destinations should he ever decide to leave the San Siro.

“I like the Premier League a lot, so maybe that would be my choice if I leave Milan,” the 26-year-old told the Daily Star newspaper.

“Whenever I can, I try to swap experiences with my friends playing in other countries and leagues.

“All the players that I’ve talked to that play in the Premier League, or used to play there, say it’s a tough league - tough, very fast and competitive.”

Kaka’s statement comes only hours after AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani told reporters that the dynamic midfielder was not on his way to Real Madrid.

The Spanish media had reported Florentino Perez is close to signing Kaka on a pre-contract agreement as part of his bid to return as Real president.

Galliani said: “Perez has not been elected president of Real and cannot therefore make any moves.

“In any case I’m certain that if one day Florentino wanted to sign Kaka he would come directly to me. Hence, I am calm.

“Kaka is not for sale and Florentino will eventually realise this.”

Hughes: Fans must wait and see

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

Mark Hughes has warned Manchester City fans they will not truly see the benefit of the squad reshuffle until next season.

The arrival of Shay Given from Newcastle completed a hectic transfer window for the City manager.Although he missed out on Brazilian superstar Kaka, Hughes signed Wayne Bridge, Nigel de Jong and Craig Bellamy.

With Given also added to a squad that contained four new faces from the Sven-Goran Eriksson era, including British record signing Robinho, the Blues have undergone major surgery.

It means Hughes is expecting major improvement during the second half of the season, starting against Middlesbrough tomorrow.

But the former Wales chief feels it will be the start of next season before the true measure of the changes he has made are seen.

“People don’t understand how much of a change has been undertaken here,” he said.

“The alterations we have made on and off the field have been vast.

“Certainly I am confident about the impact they will have and I am looking for a strong second half to the season.

“But in addition, the way we do our work on a daily basis will have a positive impact going into next season.”

There is little doubt City have a more physical presence now and, with Given behind them, more solidity at the back.

Whether the failure to lure Roque Santa Cruz the short distance down the M61 from Hughes’ old club Blackburn proves costly remains to be seen, with City’s strikeforce still lacking height, especially with Benjani still sidelined.

However, in emphasising City will not pay inflated prices, no matter who the target is, Hughes refused to budge on a final offer which Blackburn eventually turned down.

“In the end our valuation was not tempting enough to allow Blackburn to let him go,” Hughes added.

“It was quite clear we weren’t going to be able to do any business so we walked away from the deal on Saturday.”

It leaves Robinho, Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who has been cleared to play by the FA despite the likelihood of a three-match ban being imposed on Monday for his retaliatory kick at Stoke’s Rory Delap last weekend, to lead a lightweight City attack against Boro.

In theory it should not matter as Gareth Southgate’s men have slipped into the relegation zone on the back of a 12-match winless streak which has raised fresh doubts over the former England defender’s tenure at the Riverside.

City memories are also still fresh of the humiliating 8-1 defeat on Teesside at the end of last season, a result they could not overturn when the two sides met earlier this season.

And, given Boro’s desperate need for points, Hughes senses the visitors will adopt similar tactics to the ones that brought Stoke so much success seven days’ ago, despite playing almost an hour with 10 men.

“It won’t be easy because Middlesbrough do get people behind the ball, so we will have to be patient in the way we approach it and make sure we are able to break them down when we can,” Hughes added.

“Obviously that is something we found difficult to do last weekend and we need to be better.

“Middlesbrough are a young side, well organised side with lots of enthusiasm.

“They started the season quite brightly but injuries have affected them and now they are in a run of disappointing results.

“We have been highlighting things we feel will enable us to make a better fist of it, just in case they do bring everyone behind the ball.”

Robinho ‘arrested for sexual assault’

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

Manchester City forward Robinho was arrested over allegations of a serious sexual assault in a nightclub, it was reported.

Manchester City forward Robinho was arrested over allegations of a serious sexual assault in a nightclub, it was reported today.

The Brazil international’s spokesman confirmed the player met police yesterday as part of a “criminal investigation”, but did not mention the nature of the inquiry.

West Yorkshire Police said a man was arrested and questioned yesterday in connection with a serious sexual assault in a Leeds nightclub on January 14.

A spokesman for the force refused to confirm the identity of the man but said he was released on bail.

Robinho’s spokesman Chris Nathaniel said the player denied any wrongdoing and was happy to cooperate with police.

In a statement on the star’s official website, Nathaniel said: “We can confirm that Robinho met the police today (Tuesday), as pre-arranged and as part of a criminal investigation.

“He strenuously denies any allegation of wrongdoing or criminality and is happy to cooperate with the police if required further.”

Robinho, whose full name is Robson de Souza, joined City from Real Madrid in September for £32.5 million, making him the most expensive British transfer.

The 25-year-old arrived at the club following the £210million takeover by Sheikh Mansour in September.

Earlier this month Robinho left the team’s training camp in Tenerife for Brazil, citing an “important family matter”.

He returned to Manchester on Sunday for training the following day, according to his official website.

Manchester City were unavailable for comment.

Hughes backs Jo to shine

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes is convinced summer signing Jo will prove his worth at Eastlands.

The Brazilian striker, 21, could return to the side against Paris St Germain in the UEFA Cup at Eastlands tonight after recently being on the fringes.

While Robinho has settled in quickly following his summer move, Jo has struggled to adapt after arriving from CSKA Moscow.

Hughes, however, believes Jo will come good.

“He is a young player who has come into a stronger league than he has been used to, ” said the City boss.

“It takes time and it is harder for forwards to integrate straight away. Robinho has been able to adapt quicker but he is a more experienced player.

“Jo has found it a little bit of a struggle but he is working hard in training. He will get better.”

Hughes added: “There will be changes against PSG. We will look to use the squad as we need to give a respite to some key players.”

City are looking to record their third successive victory in the group - they have already qualified for the last 32 - and Hughes wants a positive response following the defeat by Manchester United.

“We need to pick ourselves up very quickly, ” he said. “No-one likes losing any game, least of all a derby.

“We came up a little bit short. Our energy levels were not where they need to be to force the issue against a side as good as United. We just needed that spark to our play.”

The French side also suffered a loss at the weekend, going down by a single goal to Rennes.

Hughes wants to finish the last two matches - they play Racing Santander in Spain in a fortnight - in style.

He said: “There is a prize to be had. If we are to finish top of the group that is to our benefit. Hopefully that will mean an easier draw in the last 32.

“If we can get a positive result from this match that should be enough and I feel we can make chances at home against any team.

“PSG are a good side. They need a decent result but it just depends on what significance they place on this competition.

“They have changed their team in previous rounds and protected their senior players for league games.”

Robinho dreams of the big time

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

AC Milan’s Brazilian superstar Kaka heads Robinho’s January transfer wish-list for his current club, Manchester City.

Manager Mark Hughes is preparing to spend big next month as he gets the first real chance to dip into the vast wealth of City’s new Abu Dhabi-based owners.

Roque Santa Cruz and Lassana Diarra are two players almost certain to end up at Eastlands.

But Robinho, captured on transfer deadline day for a British record US$50 million fee, is urging Hughes to think big.

Countryman Ronaldo is one player the 24-year-old Samba star would like to see become a Blue. But it is Kaka that Robinho feels Hughes should break the bank for.

“We have good players but if the club wants to be big, we have to sign more,” Robinho told Setanta Sports’ Football Matters programme.

“Who would I sign? If I could choose it would be Kaká and Ronaldo.”

However, Robinho accepts a more pragmatic response may be needed from the City hierarchy at present.

Defeats to Chelsea, Liverpool and, on Sunday, Manchester United, all on home soil, suggest City are a long way from the stated desire of challenging for major honours on the domestic front.

And, as Robinho points out, the foundations must be laid first.

“When you build a house you have to start from the floor,” he said.

“You have to start from the bottom, the defence, and then you fix the attack.”

With more new blood should come greater improvement in City’s mental strength.

For Robinho has detected a major problem in that department which, without substantial improvement, could cost Hughes’ team any chance of competing at the highest level.

“City have good players but the mentality of a small side,” said the former Real Madrid star.

“They are content with just finishing fifth or sixth. They are content with little, thinking just a draw might be good enough.

“They lack the mentality of champions.

“I have learnt that being second is worthless so I want to inspire a winning mentality.

“You can only be content with winning. You need to want to beat Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.

“Maybe I have changed this a bit but now City have a project to become big, the mentality has to change.”

Johnson turns to yoga

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson is having yoga sessions in a bid to cure his nagging pelvic problems.

Johnson, who signed a new five-year contract last month, has made just 36 league starts in two years since he made his debut.

In that time the 20-year-old has not managed a run of more than 10 consecutive Premier League games in one campaign and manager Mark Hughes told the Manchester Evening News: “He is still having problems with pain and has not been training with the main group. We are trying to look at all avenues in an effort to settle the problem down.”

He added: “For quite some time now, he has had pain and irritation from that area which at times has really hampered him - and on other occasions he has been able to manage.

“Everything is geared to getting Michael fit and well and being able to play and managing the level of pain that he is having at the moment.

“We hope the breaks in the season for internationals will allow us to take him out of the firing line somewhat.”

Cruciate damage for Skrtel

Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment

Liverpool have confirmed defender Martin Skrtel damaged his posterior cruciate ligament against Manchester City.

The amount of time the Slovakia international is facing on the treatment table remains unknown, although it is unlikely he will be available to manager Rafa Benitez anytime soon.

The Reds centre-back is now due to visit a knee specialist where the exact timeframe required for his recovery will be discovered.

“Martin underwent a scan this morning (Monday) which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee,” said club spokesman Ian Cotton told the club’s official website.
