Terry wants Man City talks
Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment
John Terry is believed to have approached Roman Abramovich, asking the Chelsea owner for permission to have talks with Man City.
Club insiders claim that Terry was asked by the club board last week to hand in a transfer request before they let him speak to anyone from Eastlands, but that does not seem to be the case anymore.
Abramovich wants to hold on to his club captain, but with Chelsea leaving for a pre-season tour of the US later this week, a deadline has been set for a decision, one that may see Terry move north.
City are reportedly set to table a £50m offer for the England defender, with Terry said to be paid £280,000 in weekly wages, as well as a £5m signing-on fee.
Any talks with Terry will hinge on City boss Mark Hughes who is due to fly back from City’s pre-season boot camp in Germany in an attempt to convince the Blues skipper that Eastlands is the place to be in the upcoming season.

Hiddink hails inspirational Terry
Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment
Guus Hiddink has hailed captain John Terry as the inspiration behind Chelsea’s superb defensive display in Barcelona.
The Blues held firm in the face of sustained pressure to secure a 0-0 draw at the Nou Camp in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against the Catalan giants.
Barcelona had scored in every home games this season - having last been held at home by Manchester United at the same stage of last year’s competition.
Frank Rijkaard was still Barca coach then and they have been a different prospect since he was replaced by Pep Guardiola in the summer.
However, they were kept at bay by a Chelsea backline marshalled superbly by the “inspirational” Terry.
“He was inspiring, an example for the rest of the team,” Chelsea coach Hiddink said after the match.
“You have to play courageously and play with a lot of intelligence against Barcelona, you cannot just play a tough game.
“This team has a lot of courage and a lot of blood, mentally it was great performance,” he added.
Hiddink also praised the contribution of goalkeeper Petr Cech, who began shakily but made great saves to deny Thierry Henry, Dani Alves and Samuel Eto’o.
“He did a good job defensively, he intervened in one or two situations and he saved the game for us,” he said.
The Dutch coach predicted on Monday Jose Bosingwa would thwart Lionel Messi and the Dutchman was pleased with the Portuguese full-back’s contribution on the night.
“Bosingwa did a good job and got good help from Malouda on the left. Also, when Messi moved inside, he got help from Terry,” he said.
Hiddink was even happier with the collective defensive performance of his side and, despite failing to score an away goal, declared himself happy with the result.
“We are pleased with the result,” he continued.
“If you look at the recent history of Barca, you will see it is a long time since they last failed to score in a home game.
“That’s quite an achievement against a beautiful team who play beautiful football.
“We were disciplined tactically and technically, I think we didn’t keep possession well in the first half, gave too many balls away, but in the second half we did a lot better.
“The result is a compliment to the team, achieved in a very difficult circumstances.”
Hiddink believes the tie is now very much in the balance ahead of the return match at Stamford Bridge on May 6.
“In the next game there is big advantage for either side, nothing is decided, we got a good result against a good team,” he added.
Messi was expected to shine for the Catalans but was kept quiet following a lively start and Hiddink was pleased with how his team coped with the Argentinian’s threat from the right.
“He was neutralised tactically tonight, we coped well,” he said.

Fitness deadline for Terry
Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment
John Terry will only have one training session to prove his fitness to Fabio Capello ahead of England’s trip to Belarus.
Captain Terry missed the 5-1 victory over Kazakhstan at Wembley on Saturday with a back problem which first flared up during Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League draw with CFR Cluj.
With the Three Lions flying out to Minsk on Tuesday morning, the influential centre-back is facing a race against time to convince the Italian that he is ready for 90 minutes of international action.
Rio Ferdinand took the armband in Terry’s absence at the weekend with Matthew Upson drafted into the side, but the West Ham centre-back looked nervous at times.
Football Association director of communications Adrian Bevington confirmed that Terry was due to train with his team-mates on Monday, after which a decision would be made over whether he will travel with the squad.

Ferdinand set to captain England
Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment
Rio Ferdinand could be handed the chance to lead his country once again when England play Kazakhstan on Saturday.
Current England captain John Terry is a major doubt for the World Cup qualifier, potentially paving the way for Manchester United’s Ferdinand to don the Three Lions armband.
Ferdinand, who admits he will consider his England career a disappointment if he does not win some silverware with his country, narrowly missed out on being handed the armband by Fabio Capello in August but is standing by to take over if the Chelsea man fails to shake off his back problem.
Terry has been troubled by the back complaint since a recurrence against CFR Cluj last week and while he was able to play a partial role in training on Wednesday after missing Tuesday’s session, he did not complete it all.
While the Football Association have yet to officially rule Terry out of the match, reports suggest the likes of Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott are already being readied to start on Saturday, and could even be required for the match with Belarus next week.
Emile Heskey is expected to be involved despite sitting out training on Wednesday with a back injury.
If called upon to lead the side, Ferdinand will be hoping to oversee two wins and help push England closer to a competition he is desperate to win.
The Manchester United defender has always said he will assess his success in the game by the number of trophies in his cabinet when he finally decides to retire.

England steal injury time draw
Filed Under Football | Leave a Comment
England rescued a fortunate injury time draw against Czech Republic but were overall quite poor in their last game before the start of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.
Milan Baros turned England skipper John Terry and had his shot deflected in off Ashley Cole to put the Czechs ahead. England equalised with a powerful Wes Brown header but were out-classed and outplayed by the visitors. Marek Jankulovski restored the Czech lead with a superb free-kick before Joe Cole scrambled home in injury time.
England’s performance will also have given boss Fabio Capello plenty to think about before the qualifying campaign for the next World Cup starts against Andorra on 6 September and against Croatia four days later.
