Michael Campbell, Mikael Lundberg and Alejandro Canizares are tied for the lead at seven-under-par after a weather-shortened third day at the Quinn Insurance British Masters.

For the second successive day, fog delayed proceedings until mid-morning and it was 1.30pm before the second round had been completed.

Organisers decided against a shotgun start, leaving the leaders unable to complete their third rounds before darkness fell at the Belfry - meaning an early resumption on Sunday.

New Zealander Campbell picked up four shots during the first 14 holes of his third round, while Lundberg of Sweden traded seven birdies with two bogeys before also being left with four holes to play.

Also at seven-under is Spain’s Canizares, who still has eight holes of his round remaining.

Padraig Harrington won his second straight major with victory in the 90th USPGA Championship at Oakland Hills.

The double Open champion held off Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis on a dramatic last day to end two shots clear at three under after a 66. Garcia (68) and Curtis (71) finished one under after a tense three-way tussle during the latter stages.

Colombia’s Camilo Villegas and Swede Henrik Stenson ended one over, while Steve Flesch was sixth at two over. World number two Phil Mickelson and Argentine Andres Romero were four over and Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth, England’s Justin Rose, South Korea’s Charlie Wi and India’s Jeev Milkha Singh were tied ninth at five over.

The 36-year-old Harrington, who won his second straight Open title at Royal Birkdale last month, became the first European to win the USPGA since Scotland’s Tommy Armour in 1930.

Injured Luke Donald’s hopes of making September’s Ryder Cup team suffered a further setback when he withdrew from August’s USPGA Championship.

Donald has not played since he picked up a wrist injury during the final round of the US Open in June. The 30-year-old faces a struggle to qualify automatically for the team and is not guaranteed a wild card entry.

Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo has previously said: “To pick a man who is injured would be a major story.”

The USPGA takes place at Oakland Hills, Michigan from 7-10 August. The top five players from both Europe’s world points list and the Order of Merit earnings will be selected for the Ryder Cup, which is being held in Louisville, Kentucky.
